

He received his Bachelor of Music from Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Duncan Patton, Chris Lamb, and She-e Wu, and completed his Master of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Paul Yancich and Marc Damoulakis. He is an endorser and clinician for Freer Percussion and Remo, and has given masterclasses at major conservatories and universities throughout the US.Ī native of Blacksburg, Virginia, Jay began studying piano at age 8 and percussion at age 11. Previously, he was Principal Timpanist with the National Repertory Orchestra, and has also participated in the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Music Festival, and the Britten-Pears Orchestra.Īn active educator, Jay maintains a private teaching studio in Detroit, and also works often with percussionists in the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles. Jay spends his summers performing at a variety of festivals-most recently the Sun Valley Music Festival. Jay has also appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic and the Buffalo Philharmonic. Prior to his DSO appointment, Jay was a regular extra with the Cleveland Orchestra, Principal Timpanist of the Blossom Festival Orchestra and performed frequently with other groups in the Cleveland area. In 2019, he was featured as soloist with the DSO in Philip Glass’ Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra along with DSO colleague Jeremy Epp. Gay was head arranger and percussion coordinator with the Phantom Regiment in 1996 when they won the DCI Championship.James (Jay) Ritchie joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2016 as Assistant Principal Timpanist and Section Percussionist. He has taught and written for many drum and bugle corps including The Crossmen, Phantom Regiment, Magic of Orlando, Empire Statesmen and The Yokohama Inspires from Japan. Gay marched in Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps from 1986 – 1989 where he was 1989 DCI Timpani Individuals Champion and two time DCM Timpani Individuals Champion. He performs regularly with the Walt Disney World Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, The Florida Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic and currently is the Principal Percussionist with The Brevard Symphony Orchestra and the Principal Timpanist with the Bach Festival Orchestra of Winter Park, FL. Gay has also published numerous articles for Percussive Notes magazine, the Texas Bandmasters Association, School Band and Orchestra Magazine. He has performed clinics at the Florida and Alaska PAS Day of Percussion and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Gay has presented many clinics and master classes at universities and high schools in the U.S and abroad.

He later went on to study with Paul Yancich and Richard Weiner at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he received his Master’s Degree in Timpani Performance.Īn active clinician, Mr. Gay obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance from Northern Illinois University. Located at the bustling intersection of Hollywood and Highland in Los Angeles, Musicians Institute’s campus. It includes a variety of performance venues, recording studios, classrooms, practice and private lesson rooms, production labs, and a library. Gay’s timpani etude book “ Pedal to the Kettle”, released by Tapspace Publications, is used in many states for All-State auditions as well on the state solo lists. The 60,000-square-foot Main Complex is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except holidays. As a composer and arranger he has works published by Tapspace Publications, Alfred Publications and Pan Press Publications.

He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician and an endorser and clinician for Sabian Cymbals, Grover Pro Percussion and Salyers Percussion sticks and mallets which produce his signature line of timpani mallets. He teaches student lessons for the percussion studio and directs “Black Steel” the UCF steel drum ensemble. Gay is currently the Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies and an Instructor of Music at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL.
